ABOUT

The Systems Actuary

I'm an actuarial entrepreneur and builder. My work is actuarial modelling and the systems it runs on: how models are written, run, reviewed and governed, and how AI can carry real actuarial work inside those systems.

My career began in corporate actuarial valuations: financial modelling, profitability, forecasting, embedded value and risk. Over time I became just as interested in the systems and businesses built around the models as in the models themselves.

I co-founded SelfSure, selected for the RMI-backed AlphaCode Incubate programme in 2018, and later founded Drive to Own, which earned $800k in revenue during its consumer pilot, signed up more than 6,000 interested car buyers, was backed by CFAO Toyota and Knife Capital, and won first place in the 2022 Mobility54 Digital Transformation Challenge for Africa.

Building those ventures showed me that the hard part is rarely the model. It's everything between the model and the decision: how assumptions become formulas, how a projection runs across every policy, how results are checked and traced, and how a reviewer can see exactly what changed. I call that work being a Systems Actuary. Today I build modelling systems and AI coworkers for actuaries, ARIA and Lumen among them.
