The Systems Actuary

A POINT OF VIEW

Every actuary, with digital coworkers

I believe every actuary, from student to senior, will soon work alongside digital coworkers capable of doing real actuarial work.

Not just answering questions or automating isolated tasks, but carrying work across the tools actuaries already use: investigating models, running calculations, analysing results, tracing issues and preparing reports for review.

The opportunity isn't simply to make actuaries more productive. It's to rethink how actuarial work gets done, giving actuaries more capacity for the judgement, challenge and accountability that the profession demands.

I'm building two personal projects around this vision.

The model proposes. The actuary signs.

Every number shows where it came from.

The work comes to you.

DIGITAL ACTUARIAL COWORKER

ARIA

A digital actuarial coworker designed to undertake end-to-end actuarial work across existing tools and platforms. She investigates models, executes tasks, analyses results, traces evidence and prepares work for actuarial review and sign-off.

PERSONAL ACTUARIAL COMPANION

Lumen

A personal AI companion for actuarial life. From exam practice and morning briefings to questions about models and work delegated to ARIA, Lumen brings actuarial learning, daily context and AI-assisted work into one place.

What I think about

Actuaries understand the model. I'm interested in everything built around it.

Actuarial modelling

How insurance models are built and run, from first formula to production run.

  • Readable formula logic
  • Model points, assumptions, tables
  • Pricing, valuation and IFRS 17

Modelling systems

Where models run: every policy projected at scale, with outputs ready to use.

  • Calculation engines that scale
  • Test runs and production runs
  • Outputs without export scripts

Model governance

Knowing exactly what a model did and why, so any result can be reproduced.

  • Lineage from result back to input
  • Every change on record
  • Reproducible runs and reviewer access

AI in actuarial work

Digital coworkers that do the actuarial work, with the actuary signing off.

  • Plans approved before execution
  • Every number labelled by source
  • The judgement stays with people

Mobility fintech

2022 award winner

Drive to Own

An alternative to traditional vehicle asset finance. Lenders price car loans on fixed monthly repayments, while a car loses value with both time and use. Drive to Own matched payment to use: an all-inclusive prepaid car, with insurance, service and maintenance included, paid for every kilometre driven, in real time. Ownership passed to the driver once the agreed distance was covered.

$800k pilot revenue · 6,000+ buyers signed up · 1st place Mobility54 Challenge 2022 · US$100,000 investment awarded

Mobility54 is the corporate venture arm of Toyota Tsusho and CFAO.

AlphaCode Incubate 2018 cohort

SelfSure

Consumer-funded protection for car insurance. SelfSure let drivers raise their excess to bring their premium down, then saved the difference in a SelfSure Excess Wallet that paid the excess when they claimed. Drivers kept their existing insurer, paid nothing out of pocket at claim time, and the money in the wallet stayed theirs to withdraw.

1 of 8 AlphaCode Incubate startups, 2018 · R2 million investment secured · 900 customer interviews · 35% lower premium for an early adopter

Excess Wallet covered a driver's insurance excess for a flat R69 a month.

I'm always glad to talk with other actuaries about modelling, systems and how AI is changing the work.
